INTERIOR HOME TRENDS SERIES:04 CEMENT & CONCRETE

The concrete trend, also referred to as the cement trend, is now a common fixture of Instagram feeds. In addition to providing a sturdy foundation, concrete is now being installed in homes as flooring, fixtures, and shelving. Polished concrete is characterised by its slick sheen.

‘It has a charm, a character and a delightfully wholesome feel to it, it is certainly not a boring look but somehow retains a sense of simplicity and nostalgia. In these times of bolder interior decoration and less minimalism, it seems an easy way to include a little more texture and interest.’

Modern design is characterized by large geometric patterns, industrial materials, and clean lines. A modern aesthetic may be achieved by using concrete, with its smooth surfaces, mild gray tones, and utilitarian nature. This style is characterized by distressed finishes and stone surfaces.

Interior design is always changing. Change is constant in the construction business, bringing forth new concepts that help keep ahead of the trend curve.

The innovators’ creativity is the sole limit to the industry-leading inventions that drive trends. In this round of brainstorming, the focus is on transforming industrial environments. Uncommon and at odds with prior design trends, concrete is increasingly being used in interior settings.

In recent years, exposed concrete has evolved from a purely architectural and industrial material to a source of design inspiration for interiors. Floors, walls, furniture, and home items increasingly feature the urban material, bringing textures and finishes to unexpected locations.  Timber, marble, copper, and brass may all be used to soften concrete’s modernist characteristics.

In addition to being very resistant, concrete has a sophisticated but industrial look that is difficult to ignore. Slowly, it is becoming the cornerstone of minimalist design, whether it adds rough roughness or is shockingly elegant.

Concrete hanging shelves, candle holders, and plant pots are great ways to get started.

Are you feeling more courageous?

Be bold and choose a statement piece for your dining room, living room or bar stool!  You can’t get enough of it!

Polished concrete flooring (in a non-literal sense) is striking in modern kitchens. As an alternative, consider concrete-effect wallpaper for a more industrial design, or concrete tiles for your bathroom.Do let me know in comments what you think about this episode of Home Trends series.
